The Dalles Travel Guide
Welcome to The Dalles!
The Dalles is known as the end of the Oregon Trail, a wagon trail upon which more than a half million pioneers traveled in 1843. A historic site worth visiting is Fort Dalles, which holds the Fort Dalles Museum. Established in 1850, the museum is the fort's restored surgeon—s quarters and features a collection of military artifacts, household goods and old medical equipment. Booklovers may also enjoy Klindt's, Oregon's oldest bookstore. The interactive Columbia Gorge Discovery Center is an interesting way to learn about the floods, volcanoes and geologic forces that created the Gorge. Known for its windsurfing opportunities, the Columbia River offers water sports of all kinds. Anglers can try for walleye and sturgeon while enjoying boating and canoeing. The Deschutes River State Recreation Area is a great place to enjoy the outdoors, offering hiking, biking, fishing and camping.
